Avis Car Rental Introduce
For travelers arriving at Long Island MacArthur Airport (ISP) in Ronkonkoma, New York, Avis Car Rental provides a key on-site transportation solution. Located conveniently within the airport's dedicated rental car building, Avis offers a full spectrum of rental options, ranging from economy cars for solo travelers to spacious vans for large groups. As a major national car rental agency, the Ronkonkoma location at 150 Arrival Ave aims to deliver the convenience and variety expected by both Long Island locals and visitors flying into the area.
The dual classification as a car rental agency and a van rental agency is a significant advantage for customers in the New York region, allowing families, sports teams, and commercial groups to secure vehicles that meet their capacity needs. This is particularly useful for those heading out to the East End, navigating Long Island's suburban sprawl, or making connections to the broader New York metropolitan area. Furthermore, the availability of specialized discounts, such as those for active military personnel, demonstrates an effort to serve a wide array of customers.
However, potential customers should be aware that the operational reality of this specific airport location, as detailed in customer reviews, can sometimes fall short of the major brand's promise. Reports indicate challenges with queue management, especially outside of an "Avis Preferred" dedicated line, which can lead to significant wait times, sometimes exceeding an hour for pre-booked rentals. Issues of cross-training with the co-located Budget counter staff and concerns about vehicle cleanliness have also been raised, suggesting that travelers should allocate extra time for the pickup process and be vigilant upon inspection of the assigned vehicle.
A critical piece of advice from past customers involves the "Gas Service Option": renters must explicitly inform the staff upon return if they have refilled the fuel themselves to avoid an automatic, potentially unwarranted, charge for the fuel service. The return process is also noted as non-standard, requiring the customer to park in a designated spot and physically enter the building to return keys and obtain a printed return receipt, which is highly recommended for documentation purposes.
The Avis Car Rental desk is optimally located within the Long Island MacArthur Airport (ISP) facilities, specifically at 150 Arrival Ave in Ronkonkoma, NY 11779. This position places the rental counter within the dedicated, newer Rental Car building, just a short walk from the baggage claim area in the Arrivals section of the terminal.
The facility is designed for high accessibility, catering to all travelers:
- The counter and building have a Wheelchair accessible entrance, ensuring a smooth entry for all customers.
- A Wheelchair accessible parking lot is available near the service area.
- The rental process is on-site, meaning the car lot is close by, minimizing walking distance, a valuable feature for an airport location.
The extended hours of operation, typically from 7:00 AM to 11:00 PM on weekdays, and 8:00 AM to 11:00 PM on weekends, accommodate the majority of flight arrivals and departures at ISP, providing flexibility for late-evening returns.
Avis at Long Island MacArthur Airport offers a comprehensive range of rental services tailored to both individual and group needs, capitalizing on its dual designation as a car and van rental agency.
Key services available include:
- Standard Car Rental: A diverse fleet including economy, compact, intermediate, standard, and full-size vehicles for general travel needs across Long Island and New York.
- Van Rental Agency Services: Specialization in larger capacity vehicles such as Minivans (e.g., Chrysler Pacifica), 12-Passenger Vans (e.g., Ford Transit), and potentially 15-Passenger Vans (e.g., Chevrolet Express), ideal for group transportation.
- Onsite Services: The counter and vehicle collection/return are located directly on the airport grounds, offering the convenience of an 'in terminal' experience (with a walk to the designated car building).
- Payment Flexibility: Accepts all major Credit Cards and Debit Cards, and is equipped to process modern NFC mobile payments, providing multiple options for rental payment.
- Loyalty Programs: Participation in the Avis Preferred program, which, despite local implementation challenges with a dedicated line, promises benefits like express checkout and potential upgrades.
- One-Way Rentals: Availability for one-way rental arrangements, allowing customers to pick up in Ronkonkoma and drop off at other Avis locations, subject to standard fees and availability.
The main highlights of the Avis ISP location center on its broad service offering, convenient airport placement, and specific customer-focused incentives.
Key features that are highlighted for the benefit of local New York users and visitors include:
- Active Military Discounts: A valuable and appreciated feature offering special pricing and consideration for active members of the U.S. military.
- Comprehensive Fleet (Cars and Vans): The ability to rent everything from a small sedan for personal use to a large passenger van for group travel, making it a one-stop-shop for most transportation needs.
- Extended Operating Hours: The late closing time (11:00 PM most days) provides peace of mind for travelers on late-arriving flights into Long Island MacArthur Airport.
- Modern Payment Options: Acceptance of NFC mobile payments reflects a commitment to modern transaction convenience.
- Designated Airport Location: Being within the new Rental Car building simplifies the pickup process for arriving passengers who can walk directly from baggage claim.
- Accessibility Provisions: Guaranteed Wheelchair accessible entrance and parking lot, ensuring inclusive service for all customers.

Choosing Avis Car Rental at Long Island MacArthur Airport (ISP) is worth considering for New York travelers primarily for its convenience and vehicle capacity. The location is an on-site, in-terminal operation, eliminating the need for a shuttle bus, which is a significant time-saver and comfort factor when arriving at the airport. Furthermore, the dual role as a Car and Van rental agency, offering everything up to 12- or 15-passenger vans, makes it indispensable for large group movements across Long Island. For active military members, the available discounts add substantial value.
However, the worthiness of this choice is heavily conditioned by the need for customer vigilance, as detailed in recent reviews. To maximize the value of choosing Avis ISP, customers must take proactive steps:
- Always obtain a printed return receipt at the counter to officially close the contract and prevent future billing disputes.
- Explicitly state that the Gas Service Option is not desired upon arrival and return if the tank has been refilled, as this fee is reportedly added automatically.
- Expect potential delays during peak times, as the single-line counter and shared staffing with Budget have been cited as causes for significant wait times. Booking well in advance and attempting the Avis Preferred process is recommended, though its dedicated line is not guaranteed.
- Inspect the vehicle thoroughly upon pickup and immediately report any cleanliness or maintenance issues to avoid being rushed into accepting a suboptimal car.
In summary, Avis ISP is a highly convenient, accessible, and essential transportation hub at the airport, especially for those needing van rentals or military discounts. It is a viable and robust option, provided the customer enters the transaction fully informed and prepared to actively manage the checkout and return administrative processes to ensure a smooth, transparent rental experience.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1****BEWARE OF THIS LOCATION, PLEASE READ****From Arrivals, you walk to a new building, very close to where you pick up your luggage. There is plenty of signage directing to the new Rental Car building. There is an AVIS counter, normally there is no one there because the BUDGET rental counter Staff works both AVIS and the BUDGET counter. If you fill up gas yourself for the return of the vehicle, you MUST tell them you don't want the Gas Service Option. They will automatically add this option if you don't tell them. It was added to my rental, where my original reservation did not mention when I first made the reservation. I called AVIS CUSTOMER SERVICE eventually and they credited the amount back to me. I'm trying to help you avoid this charge. The return of the vehicle, there is no one to check in your vehicle outside. You park the rental car in one of the designated AVIS spots. You go to the counter inside the building, wait on line to return the keys, have your original rental agreement that they printed with you. DO NOT LEAVE THE KEY IN THE VEHICLE. They will give you a receipt of the return print out of your vehicle. There is a wicker basket that the woman at the counter that kept stating to drop it in the basket. I would definitely recommend getting a return receipt from this location. Check out my pictures for their rules and regulations. This is not the typical rental location of an AVIS.
September 10 · Mr. S (Honest Reviewer)We arrived for a 1:30pm pickup at 1:10pm on Friday. There was no Avis Preferred line, just a single line for a single staff member. When I finally got to the front of the line, I was told that it would be a 35 minute wait. There was no option to provide my information in advance to speed up pickup - just jotted down my name. I asked if there was another size option to speed things up. The staff said they would call me when it was ready. I asked if they had no cars and she responded they have cars, they are being cleaned. A man who just received his car stormed back in to complain his car was filthy and smelled of weed, suggesting the cars were not being cleaned. We decided to wait with the growing crowd. When we asked for an update 40 minutes later, we were told there were a few people ahead of us. When asked for a specific number, it was 8. People without a reservation were arriving and being offered a car, but there would be a half hour wait.Meanwhile, Enterprise had four smiling people at the desk, happily offering their arrivals different car options for immediate pickup, because they ceased making reservations once they sold out and were able to serve their clients. They called two names and an elderly gentleman made his way up to the desk, moving slowly. Since he didn't respond immediately, they marked him as skipped and left him waiting at the counter, ignoring him entirely. When he protested, they claimed he was a no show, but eventually offered the next slot.We finally got our car an hour and a half later. I was rushed to sign the paperwork, which I did not appreciate. The vehicle was clean, but I received an SUV instead of an intermediate sedan. It was tidy.On return 3 days later, there was no signage to explain what to do with the car (whereas Enterprise has a car drop off area with signs). I parked in an Avis spot, which seemed to be the right call, but all employees in the lot worked for Enterprise or National. I was billed beyond my pre-paid amount for coverage, likely due to the change in vehicle size that I never agreed to (but I did not want to wait longer for the sedan).
July 14 · Brianna WidmerI wish I could leave zero stars. I reserved and prepaid for a mini van rental and when I went to pick it up I waited 45 minutes to be treated so rudely by an older man working the counter ( he should be fired) . I should have expected issues based on other unhappy customers at the Avis counter having issues or waiting for long periods obviously upset. I was told there were no mini vans or any larger vehicles and I should go to JFK, insanity!. When I expressed that’s not possible, the older man went into the back office and was loudly complaining to the manager about me, so unprofessional. Manager came out and was not helpful, offered a pickup truck and told me to go to JFK instead. I was never given the option to wait for a car to come in. I went to the enterprise counter next to Avis and easily rented a van (paid $$$) from a friendly and professional gentleman. Avis couldnt even refund my prepaid rental, they tossed me a paper with a number to call. To make it more insulting I saw them later offering a Tahoe to another unhappy couple, seems they pick and chose who they want to help here. Avis has lost a loyal customer. This location is terrible, completely unprofessional, unorganized and absolutely rude to customers. Do yourself a favor and avoid this location.
August 13 · Pauline VargheseIf I could leave a zero I would. Do not rent a car from this Avis location, this experience has ruined my entire perception of the Avis brand. They had me wait for nearly THREE HOURS with two small children in order to get a car and rented safety seats with very little communication or acknowledgement of the horrible experience they were creating. Both the car and the rental equipment were dirty, beat up and unacceptable. Here's more detail:I paid in advance for a selected time as I was traveling with two small children. This location had no Avid Preferred line. I waited in line for nearly 30 mins for them to put my name on a list, telling me it would take 45 minutes for me to get my car. The representatives were extremely rude, dismissive and unhelpful when I pressed what was causing the delay. The only answer I received was it was because I rented a 'specialty' car - not sure how a large SUV is considered 'specialty' - and that they were cleaning the cars. I approached the desk several times for an update and was dismissed. Finally when the car was available, which was over an hour later, it was not in the parking spot they indicated. Once we located the car it was by no means clean and we needed to still track down toddler car seats we had also rented. They directed me to a place where safety seats were supposed to be and they only had infant car seats, boxed up. I had to open boxes to see if they had the right car seat and then it took so much effort to get their attention to find two toddler car seats. The manager took nearly 45 more minutes to get two appropriate car seats for my kids, one of which was defective and the other was SOAKING WET.I would have gone to another rental counter as none of them had a line and had very kind customer service representatives but paid nearly $700 in advance for this rental car, I contacted Avis Customer Service over the phone and they told me there's nothing that could be done.
August 05 · Frances MayerI reserved a car at ISP on 07-25-25, a Friday afternoon. My flight was on time and when I went to the counter I was told it would be about 40 minutes and they would call my name. I got the impression that they were inconvenienced by me being there to pay them money for use of a car. After speaking to the other people in the lobby, I realized there were 8 people ahead of me. After an hour, there were still 5 people ahead of me and after 2 hours 4 people ahead of me. I noted that there were no angry looking people over at National or Enterprise, but they had sold out for the day and had served all their reservations. I finally gave up and got an Uber to the LIRR and made my way to the hotel via train. I made a complaint on the Avis website and they did respond to me that they would pass my comments on the the local manager, though I think local management may be part of the problem. This issue included Budget as well as they are serviced by the same staff.
