What is Worth Choosing: A Balanced Perspective
Choosing Budget Car Rental in Mesa can be worthwhile for Arizona users seeking a convenient location with a wide selection of vehicles, particularly if you need a specialty vehicle like a minivan or passenger van, or if you qualify for the active military discount. The ability to complete payments using modern methods like NFC mobile payment and the facility's accessible features are definite positives.
However, it is crucial for customers to proceed with diligence, especially in light of past customer experiences. Publicly shared customer feedback indicates potential issues that renters should be acutely aware of and prepared for:
- Vehicle Condition and Inspection: One customer reported receiving a car with immediate warning lights (incorrectly installed TPMS sensors) and later experiencing a complete system shutdown, suggesting that vehicle inspections prior to rental may sometimes be inadequate. Renters should thoroughly inspect their vehicle and test all major systems immediately upon pickup and report any concerns before leaving the lot.
- Vehicle Availability and Substitution: Reservations for a specific car model (e.g., Toyota Corolla) were not honored, and the customer was given a different, less fuel-efficient vehicle (Buick Encore, then a Dodge Charger), with only two cars reportedly available at first. Customers relying on a specific car class or size should call ahead to confirm availability and discuss substitution policies.
- Billing and Customer Service: Significant issues arose regarding unexpected and multiple charges, including towing and unauthorized swaps, totaling nearly $1,800 on a $474 reservation. Another customer reported overcharges for fuel and difficulty securing a refund without providing receipts. Always keep copies of your original reservation, all receipts (especially for fuel), and meticulously review your final bill and bank statements for accurate charges. Documenting the fuel level at return (via photo) and ensuring a final inspection is logged by a staff member is advisable.
In summary, for those in the Mesa area, Budget Car Rental on Superstition Springs Blvd offers a competitive range of vehicles and services. To maximize your experience and avoid potential pitfalls highlighted in customer reviews, it is strongly recommended to: **book well in advance, re-confirm your specific vehicle class and the details of your reservation, obtain and keep receipts for all purchases (especially fuel), and thoroughly inspect the vehicle’s condition and documentation before departing the rental location.** Proactive communication and careful documentation can significantly improve your rental experience.
Given the convenience of its location and the breadth of its fleet, this Budget branch remains a viable local option for car and van rentals in Arizona, provided the renter exercises necessary caution and oversight throughout the rental process.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I have rented from Budget multiple times before, but I have to leave my honest review because this absolutely should not have happened. I understand that things do go wrong sometimes, but I can say with almost 100 percent certainty that Budget does not properly inspect their vehicles before transferring them to another customer.I picked up a rental car from this location on 3/13/25, and within minutes of driving it, the tire pressure light came on, telling me to add air. I immediately took it to Discount Tire, where they told me the TPMS sensors in the tires were installed incorrectly—the readings were completely backward. One tire read 70 PSI, another 36, another 10, etc. The staff at Discount Tire managed to fill the tires properly and even mentioned that Budget should never have released a vehicle that wasn’t checked. On top of that, this wasn’t even the car I reserved. I had requested a Toyota Corolla or a similar vehicle, but when I arrived, there were only two cars in the parking lot. One of them was a white Buick Encore, which they gave me. Since I was leaving for California that same day, I had no choice but to take it after they told me that neither this location nor any nearby Budget locations had any other available vehicles.Halfway to California, yet another warning light came on—this time for the all-wheel drive system. Again, this was something that had clearly not been checked before they gave me the car. Then the real nightmare began. The next day, while returning to our hotel, the car abruptly shut down in the middle of an intersection. Every warning light popped up on the dashboard, and the car was completely unresponsive—I couldn’t even turn it off. It wouldn’t move, and nothing worked. To make matters worse, we were nearly hit in the intersection due to the sudden system failure.Thankfully, someone helped push the car into a dark, deserted McDonald’s parking lot. I had my two children with me, one of whom is autistic, and they were both terrified. We were stranded in the middle of nowhere at night, and when I called Budget’s customer service, I could barely understand the representative because he didn’t speak clear English. He just kept repeating that I “couldn’t abandon the vehicle” over and over. They then offered me an Uber voucher to go an hour away to the San Diego airport to pick up another car. There was no way I was going to leave my mother and my children alone in the dark to take an Uber with a stranger to a place I’d never been. After pushing back, Budget finally agreed to send a tow truck and bring me another car. When the tow truck driver called me, he said the only car available was a Dodge Charger, so I had no choice but to take it. As if things couldn’t get worse, the tow truck itself broke down, and the driver had to wait for help before he could even bring us the car.I was already unhappy with the Dodge Charger because it was not what I had originally reserved. I needed a fuel-efficient vehicle since we were driving from Arizona to California. So, we had to go to yet another Budget location to exchange it. Finally, we were able to get the car I originally requested—a Toyota Corolla. Even then, the navigation system barely worked with my phone.Fast forward to this past Thursday when I returned the vehicle. To my surprise, Budget charged my card not once, but three times—for each of the vehicle swaps, which were due to their negligence. On top of that, they charged me a towing fee, which is absolutely insane. They also charged me for the half tank of gas in the car that broke down, even though it completely died and was undriveable. In total, they charged my card nearly $1,800 when my original rental was only supposed to cost $474 for a few days.I will NEVER rent from Budget again. I understand that things happen, but the way this entire situation was handled—the lack of accountability, the extreme inconvenience, and the absurd extra charges—is completely unacceptable. Thanks, Budget, for ruining my entire vacation and ensuring that I will never rent from you again
March 21 · Kileigh AustinWhere to begin? First, got to the pickup desk and they didn’t have the car I reserved. They gave me a “free” upgrade. Ha! Ha! When I picked up my vehicle the gas tank was half full. Nobody in sight to check out return procedures. I returned the vehicle with a half of a tank of gas, and again, there was no one on sight to check out the vehicle, just someone to return the keys to. They charged my card $154. over the reservation quote of $333. When I called customer service I was told I have to submit receipts for the gas I purchased in order to get the charges refunded. Just be aware! And rent from another car rental company, because these guys are crooks!
October 09 · Connie BrooksSome of these reviews had me scared for my first time renting a car, but it truly couldn't have been more quick and painless. You can fill out most of the paperwork online/in the app beforehand and they simply verify the license and some other info and add a standard CC for a deposit. Was in and out in less than 10 minutes, with a very nice, clean, newer model Toyota SUV. I was able to drop the car off at my destination after hours in their key drop box and the car was checked in first thing the next morning. This location is located in a hotel so I saw that you are also able to drop the keys after hours with the hotel desk. I had a very pleasant experience with this location, couldn't have made my first time renting process easier, and I would rent with this location and with Budget again.
February 26 · Danielle EsplinPlease don’t book with these people. My daughter and her husband booked a rental car ahead on the way to my Daddy’s funeral. My daughter is 35 weeks pregnant and didn’t want any hitches in the trip so she called ahead to make sure she could pay for the car rental with her debit card. They assured her that was not a problem. However, upon arrival at the mesa gateway airport location, the associate informed them they couldn’t pay with a debit card because they have to have credit backing the debit card. So I called and asked to pay with my credit card. They wouldn’t allow this. They left my daughter and her husband stranded at the airport. No other agency had cars available. We had to drive nearly 4 hours one way to pick them up and another nearly 4 hours back to get in time for the funeral for my dad. Please save yourself the trouble and choose another agency. Can I give a negative star rating for their terrible policies??
February 27 · Res winsI would not recommend this rental location (Apache Junction 6650 E Superstition Springs Blvd) at all. The owner (Bob Johnson) convinced me to take an all electric vehicle, with the assurance that I would have no problems finding charging stations during our trip. We almost ran out of charge, but were lucky enough to find a charging station 22 miles (one way) out of our way. When we got the car back into the city where it was rented, there were only four charging stations in the city, and none of them were fast chargers. This means I would have to sit five hours at a charging station, or pay a flat fee to Budget. There was no home charger included with the vehicle. The guy working the counter said there is no way Budget would know if the electric vehicle THEY rent out could be charged loacllly, and admitted he knew the home charger was nowhere in the brand-new vehicle. Then he told me I was out of luck if I wanted to pay the actual charge cost and not the flat rate.He basically said "not our problem we can't support the vehicles we rent out".Horrible service.
