Budget Car Rental Introduce
For Tennessee residents traveling through the Knoxville area or welcoming visitors to East Tennessee, securing reliable transportation quickly upon arrival is paramount. The Budget Car Rental agency located on **2055 Alcoa Highway** provides a full-service option situated directly at the McGhee Tyson Airport (TYS), serving the greater Knoxville and Blount County regions. This location functions as a dedicated Car rental agency and Van rental agency, offering a fleet designed to meet a diverse range of travel needs, from a quick trip to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park to handling business travel in the state.
While the convenience of an airport location is unmatched, it is important for local users to have a full, factual overview of the experience, including both the promised services and the potential friction points. Budget provides essential services and benefits that many travelers require, but recent customer feedback indicates that operational efficiency and policy adherence can sometimes create significant challenges for customers, particularly during high-demand travel periods.
The rental counter is typically found within the terminal, immediately across from the baggage claim area on the lower level, with a short walk to the car lot in the adjacent parking garage. This setup minimizes exposure to the weather and makes the transition from plane to car as seamless as possible—a crucial detail during busy Tennessee travel seasons.
The operating hours for this high-traffic airport location are significantly extended to accommodate flight schedules:
- Monday to Friday: 6:00 AM to 12:00 AM (Midnight)
- Saturday: 8:00 AM to 12:00 AM (Midnight)
- Sunday: 8:00 AM to 12:00 AM (Midnight)
For renters with mobility concerns, the facility ensures smooth transactions with accessible infrastructure:
- Wheelchair accessible entrance for easy access to the rental counter.
- Wheelchair accessible parking lot in the garage, located conveniently near the rental vehicle staging area.
For returns outside of counter hours, Budget typically provides an after-hours return service. Renters can securely park the vehicle, note the mileage and fuel level, and deposit the keys and rental documents into a designated drop box on the rental counter.
- Vehicle Fleet Diversity: The inventory includes a wide array of options, from affordable compact cars and full-size sedans to SUVs (e.g., Ford Escape, Chevrolet Suburban) and specialized vehicles like pickup trucks and vans (e.g., Chrysler Pacifica, Ford Transit).
- Van Rental Availability: The agency's classification as a Van rental agency confirms the availability of larger capacity vehicles for group travel or light moving needs, which is essential for many family or business functions.
- On-site Services and Counter Access: The designation of "Onsite services" confirms that all necessary processing—check-in, paperwork, and vehicle assignment—occurs right at the airport facility, ensuring maximum travel efficiency.
- Military Discounts: Budget provides valuable **Active military discounts**, often in partnership with organizations like WeSalute, offering savings up to 35% on PAY NOW rates for U.S. military veterans, active-duty members, National Guard, Reservists, and their immediate families.
- Multiple Payment Options: Renters have flexibility at checkout, with the agency accepting all major Credit cards, Debit cards, and NFC mobile payments for final transaction processing. Note: Customers planning to use a debit card should be aware of stringent policies (detailed below).
- Fastbreak Loyalty Program: For frequent renters, the Budget Fastbreak program allows members to bypass the rental counter during peak hours and proceed directly to the garage area, where pre-printed agreements and keys are often available, significantly reducing wait times.
One review highlights a "Worst rental experience ever," citing check-in dragging "forever" and a "no-compromise" application of policy. Another review describes an "Absolutely horrible experience," detailing an "over 1 1/2 hour wait just to get to speak to someone" despite fully paying and filling out all paperwork in advance. This points to a clear issue with staffing levels and service efficiency during peak periods when the airport is fully booked.
- Debit Card Policy Risk: A key feature to be aware of is the stringent policy regarding debit card usage. The review noted that a customer was denied the specific vehicle they reserved (an electric car) because they were using a debit card, with the employee strictly citing "policy." Budget's general policy often requires additional documentation (like a utility bill or current vehicle insurance card) or a credit check when using a debit card, and certain specialty or luxury vehicles may be restricted to credit card holders only, even with a paid-in-advance reservation.
- Vehicle Condition Variability: One customer reported a rental car that was "a wreck—broken buttons, damaged mirror, spare tire area torn up," which suggests that renters should perform a thorough inspection of their assigned vehicle before leaving the lot and report any damage immediately.
- Long Wait Times: The consistent reports of over one-hour wait times, even with prepaid and pre-filled reservations, is a critical operational issue during busy periods. This highlights the importance of the Fastbreak program as a potential bypass mechanism.
- Dedicated Military Support: The availability of active military discounts remains a strong, positive feature for service members in the region, providing a tangible financial benefit for their travel.
- Accessibility Features: Fully accessible entry and parking ensure that the location adheres to standards of service for all members of the Tennessee community.

However, the worth of choosing this location is directly tied to a renter's preparation. To mitigate the significant risks highlighted in customer reviews, local users should strongly consider the following:
- Always use a major credit card for the reservation if a specific vehicle class or type (like an electric vehicle or luxury car) is desired.
- Sign up for the Fastbreak loyalty program and ensure your membership number is on the reservation to gain access to the dedicated, faster service line and bypass the main counter.
- Avoid peak travel days and times if possible, or be prepared for the possibility of a lengthy wait due to understaffing.
- Thoroughly inspect the vehicle upon pick-up and report any damage or mechanical concerns immediately to prevent complications upon return.
By proactively managing these policy and service variables, local travelers can maximize the benefits of the convenient TYS location and Budget’s competitive rates, making it a reliable option for East Tennessee travel.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Worst rental experience I’ve ever had. Check-in dragged forever, and every time the employee delivered bad news, he said “I have to follow policy” like it was a magic phrase that made everything okay. “Per policy,” I couldn’t have the electric car I reserved because I used a debit card. “Per policy,” customer service wouldn’t call the branch when their system later blocked me from changing my return location. Yet no one followed any policy about updating the reservation or answering the phone. The car itself was a wreck—broken buttons, damaged mirror, spare tire area torn up. Apparently “policy” only applies when it makes life harder for the customer. Never again.
October 07 · Breanna HewittAbsolutely horrible experience. On a weekend where all the rental companies and cars were fully booked they only had 2 over worked staff members working the desk leading to an over 1 1/2 hour wait just to get to speak to someone. I had done everything in advance (fully paid and filled out everything online) and simply needed the paperwork to get my car and yet all of that was utterly pointless. It is clear that this company does not care about the service it’s providing to its customers. Even upon returning to the airport to drop off the car again there was an incredibly long line, go with another company or try turo, the “savings” aren’t worth it.
October 08 · Jessica AlvarezThe RUDEST woman works here, and I hope to God you don’t get her. She is on a power trip behind her rental counter!!! Enjoyed denying my card and then cancelled my reservation on her own accord because she assumed I didn’t have money or a major credit card. AWFUL EXPERIENCE. Stranded in Knoxville, TN because of that C U Next Tuesday! AVOID!! Got a car from enterprise down the street with ZERO problems or BS. Go to Enterprise - 4411 North Clinton Hwy. They actually help their customers instead of smirking in the corner thinking they’ve ruined your day!!! I’m glad this establishment got ZERO of my money!!! Will never attempt to rent from them again. You think it won’t happen to you until it does. Just avoid. She’s waiting. And she’s got NOTHING better to do than mess up your travel plans! And then had the nerve to call out to me, “Have a nice day!” as I left the counter. I did have a nice day! Thanks to Enterprise Rent-a-Car!!!!!
October 13 · Caroline Millerwould give zero stars if possible. 2nd occasion for this place where I reserved a car 2 months in ADVANCE and they did not have a car for me. On previous occasion, they eventually got me the car I reserved after 45 minutes of waiting but today they had no car. Several other customers experienced the same thing I did. Not a 'well oiled' machine at ALL and will NEVER rent from Budget at this airport again.
October 04 · johnEasiest pick-up and drop off I’ve experienced in a while. It’s very conveniently located within 100 yards of airport exit. The staff was efficient when I picked up and quick when I dropped off.The only problem was that my cars windshield whippers were no good and the license plate was loose rattling and making excessive noise above 40 mph. I informed the agent upon vehicle return and hopefully they will fix it for the next driver. Both of these were annoying to deal with.
