The convenience of a consolidated airport location, combined with benefits like active military discounts and the fast-track Gold Plus Rewards service, makes it an attractive option for many.
However, potential renters, especially local California users familiar with the importance of transparency, should heed the specific cautions raised by customer feedback. These reviews, detailing charges for fuel despite returning the car with the same range and a major dispute over a defective vehicle, highlight the necessity of meticulous record-keeping.
Essential Tip for Renters: To safeguard yourself against potential disputes regarding fuel charges or vehicle condition, it is highly recommended to take timestamped photos or a video recording of the following items at both pick-up and drop-off:
- The vehicle’s exterior condition, especially for pre-existing damage.
- The dashboard, clearly showing the mileage and the fuel gauge (or the EV charge/range).
- Any error or warning messages on the dashboard upon initial start-up, immediately reporting any safety-critical issues to the staff before leaving the premises.
Customers should also be familiar with company policies, such as the confirmed AAA additional driver waiver, to ensure all benefits are applied correctly and to quickly identify any unauthorized fees. While the reported experience with a "rude, defensive" manager and unauthorized charges is a serious cautionary note, a major brand provides official channels for escalation (as the customer noted) and charge disputes. By combining the speed and selection of a major airport agency with careful personal documentation and knowledge of policies, customers can mitigate risks and successfully begin their journey across California.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I rented a car from Hertz and had a disappointing experience. When I first picked up the car, the dashboard showed 343 miles of range. I made sure to return it with exactly the same fuel range, yet I was still charged an extra $20 for fuel.It feels unfair and misleading, and I would strongly recommend taking photos of the fuel gauge and mileage when you pick up and return the car to avoid these kinds of charges. Be very careful.Tip for future renters:Make sure to check and take a photo of the fuel level when you pick up the car. Sometimes the tank isn’t completely full, even though it’s marked that way. If you return it at the same level, they might still charge you for fuel — assuming it should have been full. I recommend taking photos both when you pick up and return the vehicle, just to protect yourself.
August 27 · A YTitle: Terrible Experience with Faulty Vehicle and Rude Manager – Avoid This LocationI had an absolutely frustrating and unacceptable experience renting from Hertz at the San Diego airport on July 27, 2025, as a President's Circle member. I picked up a Toyota Sienna XLE from the President's Circle section, expecting a smooth process given my status. We drove the car to our nearby hotel without issues. However, in the afternoon, when we started the car, multiple serious malfunctions appeared on the dashboard, including RSA Malfunction, Pre-Collision System Malfunction, LTA Malfunction, and Front Camera Unavailable. These safety issues made the car undrivable. We tried calling the location multiple times but got no answer, so we carefully returned it to the airport location immediately. We explained the situation to the manager on duty, Greg, and politely requested a vehicle exchange. Instead of helping, he accused us of causing the damage and questioned why we accepted the car in the first place. As customers, we're not mechanics – we can only inspect for visible exterior damage during pickup. He refused to waive charges and insisted on billing us $47.01 for the one-mile "rental," which directly contradicts Hertz's policies on handling defective vehicles. On top of that, the invoice included a $15 additional driver fee, which Greg claimed is only waived for family members. This is false – Hertz policy allows a waiver if both drivers are AAA members, as my friend and I are, and we've rented together before without this charge. The fee was added to our contract without our consent during pickup, and Greg was completely unfamiliar with company policies. He was rude, defensive, and even twisted my words to suggest I accused the company of "stealing" when I pointed out that unauthorized charges are unlawful. To avoid further conflict, we were forced to close the contract and open a new one for another car. This location's poor service, lack of accountability, and disregard for safety and policy ruined the start of our trip. As a loyal Hertz customer, I'm deeply disappointed and will be escalating this to corporate, disputing the charges with my credit card, and considering legal action if needed. Skip this Hertz branch – there are better rental options at SAN.(Attached photos: Rental invoice showing only 1 mile driven and full charges; car window marked with "RSA Malfunction" by staff; dashboard error messages.)
September 10 · terry zI remember a time when renting from Hertz was something to look forward to. Not anymore, at least not at this location. Rented a Polestar, was offered a damned Altima. Argued and ended up with a dirty broken Hyundai. Can't wait to give the keys the valet tonight, he's gonna love the stained seats and broken interior panels. Nothing makes you feel as special as being the guy with the busted car in the valet line. If this is what President's Circle vehicles look like I feel real bad for folks without status.Edit: After seeing Hertz's prompt response to my review I thought, wow, maybe something positive will happen. After scrolling down, I now see their "prompt response" is a prefab statement they have posted dozens of times to other renters with exactly the same complaints. Hard to imagine running a company where "allow the relevant management team to bleed customers" is allowed. Gross.
September 20 · J VAKind of confusing check out. And they have a very difficult time recording your points. I probably would go with someplace cheaper. In the long run it's better for the exact same vehicle.
September 15 · Paul EconomonIf I could leave zero stars I would. Hertz is supposed to be the best. I have rented frequently from Hertz across the country, but this was such an unpleasant surprise and experience. Our car was filthy inside and out. We asked the attendant to wash it and they refused. No windshield wiper fluid in the reservoir. We had to have the fluid filled when we took the car to be washed at our expense. It was embarrassing to drive otherwise. Dents all over the car. Thankfully took pictures of each one to document. Engine light came on after the 3rd day of a 9 day rental. Had to change all plans for the day to return to the facility. 2nd car equally banged up, dirty and a gas guzzler after assurances of great gas mileage. I have rented from the San Diego facility many times, first time from Hertz. I hope that they get their act together. As I mentioned above, I have always thought of Hertz as the best.
