Payless Car Rental Introduce
Introduction / Overview: Payless Car Rental at San Diego International Airport
For California residents and travelers arriving into Southern California, securing reliable ground transportation is a crucial step in any journey. Payless Car Rental operates a convenient location at the heart of the San Diego International Airport (SAN) facility, positioning itself as an accessible option for those landing in America’s Finest City. As a recognized name in the rental market, Payless typically caters to budget-conscious users looking for competitive rates on a variety of vehicle types, from standard passenger cars to larger passenger and cargo vans.
The agency’s key offerings include both traditional car rental services and specialized van rental options, which are highly beneficial for larger groups, family vacations along the California coast, or commercial/business needs within the San Diego area. They accept multiple modern payment methods, including credit cards, debit cards, and convenient NFC mobile payments, providing flexibility for customers.
However, users approaching this location, particularly from the perspective of savvy California consumers, should proceed with caution and a high degree of diligence. Public customer reviews indicate a challenging customer service environment, raising concerns about unexpected charges, aggressive upselling, and potentially misleading information regarding policies like prepaid fuel. It is paramount that every customer meticulously verifies all charges and carefully inspects the vehicle condition before finalizing the rental agreement, ensuring that their expectations align precisely with the terms of the signed contract.
Location and Accessibility: Convenient Airport Hub Access
The Payless Car Rental location is strategically positioned to serve passengers flying into San Diego International Airport (SAN), offering a high degree of convenience for travelers as part of the airport's consolidated rental services.
The official address is:
3355 Admiral Boland Way Ste R179, San Diego, CA 92101, USA
This address is located within the airport’s general vicinity, placing the rental counter and fleet in a centralized, dedicated area for rental car services. The location's key accessibility features are designed to comply with airport standards and ensure ease of access for all patrons:
- Wheelchair Accessible Entrance: The facility provides accessible entry points, allowing all customers, regardless of mobility level, to reach the counter.
- Wheelchair Accessible Parking Lot: Designated, accessible parking is available, catering to customers requiring special parking accommodations during the pick-up or drop-off process.
Given its airport-proximate status, the location generally maintains extensive operating hours, often from 6:00 AM to 11:00 PM, seven days a week, making it accessible for nearly all arriving and departing flights in San Diego. Customers are typically transported to this location via the airport's consolidated rental car shuttle service, simplifying the process of obtaining their vehicle immediately upon arrival.
Services Offered
Payless Car Rental at this prime San Diego location offers a focused range of rental types and transactional services:

- Flexible Payment Methods: Acceptance of major Credit Cards and Debit Cards for both rental payment and required security holds (note: debit card use may be subject to a credit check and longer hold times).
- NFC Mobile Payments: Accepting near-field communication (NFC) payments, such as Apple Pay or Google Pay, for a quick and modern transaction process at the counter.
- Prepaid Fuel Option: An available service that allows renters to purchase a full tank of fuel at the time of rental, though customers must be aware that no credit is issued for unused fuel upon return, making careful policy review essential.
- Optional Services: Including insurance waivers, roadside assistance plans, and special equipment like child safety seats and GPS navigation, all of which incur additional daily fees.
Features / Highlights
While the service has received negative attention in customer feedback, the agency’s structural and service-related highlights are noted:

What is Worth Choosing
For California travelers, Payless Car Rental is only worth choosing under specific circumstances that demand a proactive and meticulous approach to the rental process. The primary draw is the location’s convenience at the San Diego Airport and the potential for cost-effective rates, especially when booking an economy car or a specialized van. If securing the lowest possible initial price is the absolute priority, Payless may appear competitive.
However, potential customers must be fully prepared for the common pitfalls highlighted in numerous public reviews. It is critically important to:
- Document Everything: Before leaving the parking lot, thoroughly inspect the vehicle (which customers report may have prior damage, or be older than expected, such as a 2020 model) and take detailed, time-stamped photographs of every panel and the fuel gauge.
- Scrutinize the Contract: Review every line item of the final contract, especially details concerning prepaid fuel policies and any attempted upsells, as customers frequently report discrepancies between verbal information and the final written charges. For instance, the prepaid fuel option is a 'buy a full tank' policy with no refund for unused gas, regardless of what may be stated verbally.
- Confirm Vehicle Details: Verify the model, mileage, and condition, ensuring it matches the reserved class and is in satisfactory operating condition.
- Anticipate Challenges: Be aware that follow-up for issues like refunds or charge disputes may be difficult and require persistent effort, as implied by the reported unreturned emails and unhelpful management responses.
In summary, while Payless offers location-based convenience and competitive rates, the decision to rent here should be weighed against the reported risks of poor customer service and unexpected fees. Savvy California renters must be prepared to be their own best advocate by adhering to a strict process of documentation and verification.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Absolutely terrible experience at Payless Car Rental San Diego Airport. I prepaid through Armed Forces Travel, but they still tried to upsell me and added extra charges I never agreed to. The agent, Nate, seemed more focused on his burrito than customer service. Follow-up emails go unanswered, and calling gets you nowhere. Worst customer service I’ve ever had. STAY AWAY from Payless San Diego—check your paperwork before leaving the counter. I’ll be sticking with Hertz or Enterprise from now on. I would rate them a ZERO, but 1 is the lowest Google will let you go. So many negative reviews 1.5 stars overall, they must be correct. Almost all the cars have some sort of damage on them. Take pictures before you leave.
October 10 · Mark FriendDo not rent from here. They asked me if I wanted to pre pay for gas saying 1) it was $1 cheaper than outside and 2) I only paid for the fuel I use. I specifically asked this question and he said no. This was very clear. They either didn't know the policy or willingly misled me.First they charged me for a full tank at 16 gallons, $72. The car I rented only had a 9.2 gallon tank. I let them know and it was updated to pay for a full tank. You have to hold them accountable for everything. When I called the manager she was condescending and mocking, "we'll get him". I am a professional and don't appreciate this immature behavior from a supposed supervisor. I don't need you to get your employee I need you to train them and refund my money when they have mislead me. She said they record those conversations which would be great. And she said she would send it to me, this would have the proof of what I am told and helpful. In addition the car was terrible, old, no auto lock, my uncle said it sounded like it was in its last leg. A 2020 car at a rental company? Stay away!!
May 07 · Megan DSan Diego airport was very busy the day we arrived. Waited about 20 minutes to get on a shuttle to the rental center. Line moved steady. Once at Payless we were the first in line and were taken care of promptly. Although they did try to upsell us on supposedly bigger car and unnecessary insurance we respectfully declined knowing my car insurance covers me for rentals. Upon arriving at our assigned car we definitely were not super excited. The car had a lot of marks on it and didn’t seem completely clean on the outside, but the inside was mostly clean. Car had the worse ride ever. It was a Mitsubishi Mirage. Small tires and a harsh ride with no power. I always document the cars I rent before and after the rental, just in case there’s say after the fact that we caused damage. This one would have been hard to tell as there were marks all over it. I guess I’ll check the reviews next time before I rent. Probably wouldn’t rent again from them at this location unless it was last resort.
July 10 · Gary WemetteWorst experience renting a car EVER. Because my flight was delayed 2 hrs, I was told my reservation had expired and my car rented out but not to worry because at the new "low" rate, I would actually qualify for a courtesy "upgrade to a luxury class car". I wasn't 😡. It went from a mid-size SUV to a Hyundai Kona - a mini coupe. I ended up paying a higher rate but downgraded car that hadn't been cleaned and the inspection was a joke. Customer service seems nice enough but I feel they are trained to swindle customers with short, fast talking.
June 07 · Meka GrossWhat a scam! Unfortunately, I didn't check the reviews before using Payless. I booked my reservation online, and I was looking for the cheapest car I could find. It was offered at $25 per day. I opted for the $11 daily insurance. When I got there, Omar was really nice and chatted with me while he did his thing on the computer. He offered me a better car at a cheaper rate than the one I had reserved. I should've known something was up then. I agreed and then signed several documents electronically without seeing the itemized cost of everything. Omar then told me a deposit of $250 would be applied to my card. Ok, no problem. Then I got my receipt, without looking at it, and drove away. As I was leaving, I immediately got another alert on my credit card for a charge of $683.97!!! This is for a $25 car rental per day, with $11 insurance/day. He charged me $42 /day for the car and then $516 for everything else (vehicle license fee, collision damage, liability, PPC, SLI, RSA, an upgrade charge!!!, concession fee, tourism fee, and airport CFC, all before sale tax was included! This place is a scam!
