As soon as I pulled off the lot, I realized something was wrong with the car—it drove horribly. My husband also test drove it and said it felt like the vehicle was stuck in neutral. Unfortunately, the rental office had already closed, so I contacted the call center immediately. They noted everything I said and told me I could switch the car out in the morning, and that the location manager, Nate, would call me.No one ever called.So on my actual birthday, instead of celebrating, I had to go back to the office and deal with this issue myself. Nate offered me two downgrade options: a Kia Soul or Jeep Renegade—both smaller than the Volkswagen Taos I originally rented. I explained I needed the same size vehicle or a refund. He claimed the Renegade was larger, but after I transferred all of my items, they didn’t fit. I had a double stroller, two car seats, a suitcase, and bags for two children under 2.Not only did Nate not help me transfer my things, but he also walked away without offering support or even checking to see if my family and I were okay. I noticed there were two other SUVs on the lot he could have offered, but he didn’t. He also never checked other locations for alternatives. His attitude was careless, dismissive, and showed no concern for my safety or situation.I even showed him a video I recorded of the original car’s driving issues—specifically how it failed to accelerate, and the MPH would suddenly jump. His only response was, “You were doing 60,” completely ignoring the dangerous performance issues I was showing him. He tried to blame me for how the car was driving, claiming the previous renter had no issues and that he drove it “just fine” afterward. How could I possibly damage a car in 10 minutes? Especially when I reported it right away and it’s documented in their system.I told him this entire situation ruined my birthday and caused me to delay my travel plans. I didn’t trust driving my husband and our two babies in a car that felt like the transmission was going out. Still, Nate refused to issue a full refund. He only agreed to remove the July 1 charge, but said I’d still be charged for June 30—even though the car was unusable from the moment I drove off.And the worst part: when I declined the Jeep and asked for a refund, I had to wait 1 to 2 hours in the summer heat for an Uber. My Lyft driver had to leave because Nate took so long processing the refund. I was left standing outside with two crying babies, a double stroller, luggage, car seats, and no help.No one offered us water. No one asked us to come inside. No one cared.I stood outside crying, sweating, upset, and completely heartbroken that this is how my birthday was going. All I wanted was to enjoy time with my family. Instead, I was treated like I didn’t matter.I truly believe I was taken advantage of—a young woman, alone with two small kids. I felt helpless and completely disrespected by the manager, Nate. This was hands down the worst birthday I’ve ever had, and this location should be held accountable for how they treat their customers—especially families with children.
