Avis Car Rental Introduce
For Connecticut residents and visitors utilizing the southeastern part of the state, Avis Car Rental at the Groton-New London Airport (GON) provides a convenient and accessible option for personal and commercial vehicle needs. Situated directly within the airport terminal, this location offers a gateway to exploring the Mystic Country region, from the historic waterfronts of New London to the coastal charms of Stonington and Mystic. Operating as both a Car rental agency and a Van rental agency, Avis here aims to service a wide range of local user demands, whether you need an economy car for a quick trip across the Thames River or a larger vehicle for a family outing to the Mystic Aquarium.
The facility is tailored for ease of use, providing Onsite services and a straightforward rental process, though local users should note the unique setting within the modest, older airport terminal. While some customers have noted that the physical surroundings may feel "dated," the benefit is a "low stress" environment compared to the large, chaotic hubs of major international airports. The core promise of Avis—having your reserved vehicle ready—is generally upheld, allowing local patrons to transition quickly from arrival to the Connecticut roadways.
Crucially for the significant military community in the Groton/New London area, the location highlights its support with Active military discounts, recognizing the importance of providing value to service members and their families. However, local feedback strongly indicates that customers must exercise diligence in the rental and return process, particularly concerning vehicle cleanliness and the final fuel check, to avoid potential billing disputes.
The Groton Avis Car Rental is located directly within the Groton-New London Airport (GON) terminal building. This positioning makes it one of the most convenient rental options for those flying into or living near the New London County area. It is important for new customers to be aware of the exact location to ensure a smooth pickup and drop-off experience.
- Address: 155 Tower Ave, Groton, CT 06340, USA.
- Specific Location Note: The rental desk is located inside the main airport building, which is a small, easy-to-navigate terminal, not a separate building across the street. This eliminates the need for shuttle bus services often associated with larger airports.
- Vehicle Parking: All rental cars and vans are typically parked in the open parking lot directly in front of the main airport entrance, ensuring simple, immediate access for customers.
- Parking: The facility offers On-site parking for personal vehicles, which customers can use for free while picking up or dropping off rentals, adding to the overall convenience.
- Accessibility: The location prioritizes access with a Wheelchair accessible entrance and a Wheelchair accessible parking lot, ensuring the facility is manageable for all users.
Avis Car Rental in Groton provides comprehensive rental services to meet various travel and transport needs, from solo business trips to large group outings across Connecticut.
- Car Rental Agency: Offering a diverse fleet of vehicles ranging from economy and compact cars—ideal for short, fuel-efficient travel—to full-size sedans, SUVs, and luxury options for more comfortable or prestigious travel.
- Van Rental Agency: A crucial service for families, sports teams, or small businesses, providing minivans and larger passenger vans. This is particularly useful for group travel to local Connecticut attractions or events.
- Onsite Services: Customers benefit from a physical desk location within the airport building, allowing for immediate assistance, rental paperwork processing, and vehicle key collection upon arrival.
- Payment Flexibility: Accepts a variety of payment methods to accommodate all customers, including major Credit cards, Debit cards, and modern NFC mobile payments.
- After-Hours Return: A night drop box is available for customers who need to return their vehicle outside of the staffed hours, providing essential flexibility for early morning departures or late-night returns.
While the physical location may possess a classic, older aesthetic, the strength of the Groton Avis location lies in its core benefits and commitment to certain customer segments in Connecticut.
- Active Military Discounts: A significant and valued highlight in this region due to the presence of a major military base nearby. Avis is recognized for offering special rates and discounts to active military personnel, veterans, and their families.
- Low-Stress Airport Experience: The small size of the Groton-New London Airport makes the rental process notably easier and faster compared to busier regional hubs, leading to an "easy, low stress option" for quick vehicle retrieval.
- Guaranteed Reservation (Prepaid): Customers who pre-pay for their reservations often find their specific vehicle type, or a suitable equivalent, is ready and waiting, reinforcing the reliability of their booking system for essential travel.
- Easy Access and Parking: The simple layout of the airport, with cars parked immediately in front of the terminal, and the availability of free personal parking, simplifies the logistics of the entire rental transaction.
For Connecticut customers looking to secure a reservation, inquire about fleet availability (especially for larger vans), or clarify discount eligibility, the following contact information should be used. Please note that hours can be slightly variable and checking them prior to arrival is always recommended, particularly on weekends.

Choosing Avis Car Rental at the Groton-New London Airport is a smart decision for Connecticut users who value convenience and a friction-free airport experience over modern aesthetics. The primary draw is the unbeatable logistical ease. Located directly inside the small airport terminal with immediate access to a fleet of vehicles parked right outside, the process is inherently more efficient and less stressful than navigating the long distances and shuttle buses of larger, busier rental centers like those serving Bradley or Rhode Island.
Furthermore, the availability of specialized vehicles, particularly the Van rental options, makes this a key resource for local groups, businesses, or large families in the New London County area who need reliable transport for group activities or moving goods. The commitment to providing Active military discounts is also a major reason for the local community to choose this provider.
However, prospective customers must heed the recurring feedback regarding potential issues: always perform a thorough walk-around and photograph the vehicle's interior and exterior condition upon pickup to document any existing scuffs, dirt, or crumbs. Most critically, when returning the car, customers should not get distracted; it is vital to keep the fuel receipt or take clear pictures of the fuel gauge to counteract any erroneous automatic charges for a full tank fill-up. By taking these necessary precautions, Groton residents can take full advantage of this strategically located and generally reliable car and van rental service, minimizing hassle and maximizing convenience for their Connecticut travel needs.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Google maps had wrong location. It is located within the main airport building - not a small separate building across the street. Hours also slightly different. Included exterior pictures of the building, posted hours on the entryway glass, the night drop box, interior pictures of the Avis/Budget desk and the general building interior. It is a time capsule. Hasn't been updated in easily 20 years. It isn't in terrible condition just very dated.Easy access to location. Airport is not busy. You can rent cars or Budget box trucks from there. Plenty of free easy access parking for your personal car and to pickup / drop-off the rental. The cars / trucks are all parked in front of the main airport entrance in an open parking lot.For what it lacks in modern aesthetic, it is an easy, low stress option. Not sure how much this location doesn't follow through on commitment to having the rental available after making a reservation. I prepaid online and our white Chevy Tahoe hybrid was there. Although, the vehicle wasn't clean when we picked it up. The seats had some yuck, there were wrappers inside and dirt / crumbs in the very back cargo area. Agent didn't do walk-around so we took plenty of pictures of the scuffs and scratches outside and inside.
August 22 · Chris ClappIf I could give zero stars I would. Having rented from AVIS many times prior, both personally and business, this is the last time I will use this rental car option and I will no longer recommend it's uses for work travel. First time charged for full gas tank fill up despite returning the car full.I rented a vehicle to simply travel to Bradley Airport. For such a short trip I rented the most cost effective, fuel efficient option. The car was overfilled at pickup and still full after such a short trip that topping off for less than $5 was a courtesy. At check in the attendant scanned everything in and took a quick look saying we were good to go. The car was returned full and AVIS still charged my card for a full fill upCustomer service has been atrocious and they refuse to rectify the overpayment. And of course because I for once didn't keep a receipt for a few bucks. But also how does their system ignore that they physically look at the fuel gauges when the cars are received so at some point someone(s) have seen it was full but I was still automatically charged. Save yourself the hassle. Either don't use AVIS or don't get distracted because you have a major life event occurring and accidentally forget to make note of everything during the car return process.
June 27 · Jerusha MI wish there was a capability to give no stars and still post. My life's safety was put at risk when I was first given a vehicle that had immediate maintenance needed to be done, faulty/shaking breaks, power steering warning lights alert on dashboard, oil change and no windshield washer fluid. After letting the agent know I don't feel safe to travel and ask for another vehicle, to be met with "this is all I got".... But to then be put in a replacement vehicle that was in an accident previous to my paid reservation and no fault to me with the markings still on the vehicle and not cleaned. How would anyone, who is suppose to be a valued customer, want to ever recommend to a friend or colleague after having such a rental experience like this.
September 03 · KI booked a car rental for a funeral for when I will be in town (celebration of life). It was for April, plans changed slightly and I needed to add an extra day, no problem, I went online and changed the return day to add a day at 0400 (same time), and the rate went up by about $240 EXTRA for that one single day.I was quite upset and called Avis directly and was told that was accurate. So I hung up quite unhappy and went to another car rental website and booked the entire trip for just under $275… including my extra day. I called back to cancel and told him what I did and that i would like to speak to a manager, and he told me “the managers are here to manage us, not to help customers.” That was the exact quote he told me, I was extremely surprised. I told him if he didn’t help me and fix the price to something realistic (vs their competitor) I would cancel. He informed me I can go ahead and cancel and I’m gonna be charged $50 for a cancellation fee. I’m gonna be honest, I wasn’t very damn happy, I’m still not very happy. But I canceled it and ate the $50.That is trash, horrible customer service. I literally tried to let them do the right thing, and they shot themselves in the foot and made the choice not to.So just for the heck of it, I pretended I was making a new reservation on Avis.com, For the same time plus the additional day I needed, and when I did instead of the almost $600 that he was telling me… It came to about $338! Please tell me how that isn’t a scam?!So to say the least, I have a car rental booked with another competitor, for a fraction of the B.S. price that they told me, and on top of that they attempted in my eyes to scam me on the phone and tried to charge me almost $600 to add an additional day, And then when I made the “new” reservation on their website it came to about $388!Way to go Avis, that is probably top 3 most awful customer experiences I’ve ever had to deal with.Going back for the reason I have to go back is bad enough without your company trying to screw me over.**EDIT**I called back today and got a helpful customer service agent, I explained my issue/complaint and he promptly refunded me my $50. He said the 2 separate refunds for the partial amount and then the $50 will come thru to me as 2 separate transactions, once they both show on my card I will update further and change my review accordingly. They told me 7-10 business days.**UPDATE** 3/26/25They have refunded 1 of the 2 transactions, I am still waiting to see the $50 "fee" refunded.**UPDATE** 4/10/25They have refunded me the $50 fee also. I'll raise it to 3 stars only due to the helpful customer service people after my initial interaction.
April 10 · BryanAttention,I want to share my experience, which was a nightmare. I made an order for a large and comfortable SUV for my family, including my 85-year-old relative who is one of the most important passengers. I arranged this almost a month in advance. However, they called me just one hour before I was supposed to pick up the car to inform me that they didn't have the SUV available. Instead, they offered me a pickup truck.I was shocked, sad, and upset. I didn't know what to do. When I contacted the company to request my money back, they deducted $31 from my refund. Can you trust this kind of business? It's up to you to decide, but I work hard for my money, and I can't understand why I didn’t receive my full reimbursement.
