LAX Rental Car Center Introduce
For anyone traveling to or from Southern California via the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), securing a rental vehicle has recently been centralized into a single, massive facility known as the LAX Rental Car Center, officially the Consolidated Rent-A-Car (ConRAC) facility. This major infrastructure project was designed to streamline the rental process, reduce traffic congestion around the airport terminals, and provide a dedicated, modern space for vehicle transactions. Located just off airport property, the facility at 5251 W 98th St is now the official point of service for a growing number of major rental brands.
From a local user's perspective, this center represents the single most important location for accessing a rental car in the LAX area. It is a one-stop-shop meant to consolidate the operations that were previously scattered across several smaller, individual lots, often requiring long, confusing rides on separate company shuttles. The new multi-story complex houses the rental counters, vehicle ready-lanes, and return bays under one roof, creating a distinct, unified experience for customers driving in California.
While the concept of a consolidated facility promises long-term efficiency, the current user experience is still evolving, particularly as the final phase of the airport's overhaul, the Automated People Mover (APM) train, is yet to be completed. Currently, access relies entirely on dedicated courtesy shuttles from the terminals, which, as customer feedback indicates, can lead to significant transit and wait times, especially during peak travel hours like a Saturday afternoon. For this reason, prospective renters must plan their visit wisely and utilize available express services to maximize their precious California time.
The LAX Rental Car Center is strategically located a short distance from the airport terminals, positioned to allow for quick vehicle access to the major freeways servicing the Los Angeles area.
The physical address for the consolidated center is: 5251 W 98th St, Los Angeles, CA 90045, USA.
The center's location near the junction of the 405 (San Diego Freeway) and 105 (Century Freeway) is key, providing relatively direct routes to key California destinations. Once a renter exits the facility with their vehicle, they are quickly placed onto the main thoroughfares heading north toward Santa Monica and the beaches, east toward Downtown Los Angeles, or south toward Orange County, reducing initial navigation headaches.
Current accessibility to the center is achieved through two main methods:
- Courtesy Shuttle Service: Airline passengers must first take a dedicated, free courtesy shuttle from the purple-signed 'Rental Car Shuttles' stop on the arrivals (lower) level of the airport terminals. This shuttle transports customers directly to the center. This ride, however, is subject to LAX's infamous traffic congestion.
- Local/Walk-Up Access: Customers not arriving by air can drive directly to the address, making it accessible for local residents in the LA area needing a rental.
The facility itself is designed with modern accessibility standards, reflecting a commitment to serving all travelers:
- Wheelchair Accessible Entrance: The main entry points are built to easily accommodate individuals using mobility devices.
- Wheelchair Accessible Parking Lot: Dedicated, clearly marked parking is provided for those accessing the facility directly or for those being dropped off.
As a mega-hub, the LAX Rental Car Center hosts multiple car rental agencies, allowing users to compare services and pricing across various brands in one location. While the initial wave of tenants focused on the Avis Budget Group brands (Avis and Budget, along with those that operate under their umbrella), the full goal is to encompass five rental car companies representing over a dozen brands, which will include Enterprise, Alamo, National, Hertz, and Sixt.
The core services provided within this consolidated model are designed for both efficiency and comprehensive coverage:
- Onsite Services: The facility provides dedicated counter space, vehicle pick-up and drop-off areas (ready/return bays), and centralized maintenance and vehicle prep areas (Quick Turn Around).
- Comprehensive Vehicle Fleet: Agencies operating within the center offer a full spectrum of rental options, from economy cars perfect for LA city commutes, to SUVs and minivans for California family road trips, and even luxury or specialty vehicles for a more upscale drive.
- Payment Flexibility: The center and its tenants accept a wide array of payment methods, catering to international and domestic travelers:
- Major Credit Cards
- Debit Cards (subject to individual company policies on required holds and credit checks)
- NFC Mobile Payments (for quick, contactless transactions)
- Express Rental Programs: Major tenants strongly encourage the use of loyalty and express programs (such as Avis Preferred or Budget Fastbreak) which are designed to allow renters to bypass the main service counter, proceed directly to the garage level, and select their vehicle, critically saving time and mitigating long waits.
- 24/7 Operation: Rental services at the LAX ConRAC facility, particularly those of major tenants like Avis and Budget, are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, accommodating all flight schedules.
The greatest highlight of the LAX Rental Car Center is its forward-looking design and the long-term potential for travel convenience in Southern California.
- Consolidated Operations: Eliminates the need to navigate to multiple, distant rental lots, centralizing all rental transactions—pick-ups, counter service, and returns—into one large, modern complex.
- Future Direct Connection via APM: The facility is a key stop on LAX's Automated People Mover (APM) train line, which, upon completion, will provide a rapid, direct, and traffic-free link from all airport terminals to the car rental center. This feature is expected to drastically reduce the current 30-40 minute shuttle transit time and overall wait experience.
- Modern Transaction Options: All agencies are equipped to handle modern payment technology, including NFC mobile payments, catering to a fast-moving, tech-savvy customer base.
- Dedicated Accessibility: Provision of wheelchair accessible entrances and parking ensures the facility is inclusive and easy to use for all travelers with mobility considerations.
- Structured Process: The very nature of the ConRAC facility promotes a more structured, organized experience than the previous disparate lots, which is beneficial for large-scale operations.
For general information or to locate the facility, the following details are essential. For specific car reservations or company-specific policies, users must contact the individual rental brand they have booked with.
Address: 5251 W 98th St, Los Angeles, CA 90045, USA

Choosing the LAX Rental Car Center for your Southern California vehicle needs is a choice for the future of convenience, even if the present experience has some growing pains. The absolute worth of this choice is the centralization of operations. No more wandering between terminals trying to find a specific shuttle; all rental buses use the designated purple-signed stop on the arrivals level and take customers to the same facility. This clarity alone is a significant benefit when arriving after a long flight.
However, the current customer experience is defined by long waits and the slow shuttle ride. Customer reviews clearly highlight "horrendous" and "endless lines" with wait times of an "hour or more" just to reach an agent, leading to a total process of up to two hours from bus to car. This "long-winded experience" is likely due to the initial consolidation phases and the lack of the APM connection.
Therefore, for local California users and visitors alike, the one essential factor that makes this center a worthwhile choice is the mandatory use of an express/loyalty rental program. Programs like Avis Preferred, Budget Fastbreak, or National’s Emerald Club allow customers to skip the counter entirely, proceed directly to the garage, find their pre-assigned or designated car, and exit with minimal agent interaction. For the savvy traveler or local professional, this feature turns a potentially two-hour headache into a quick, twenty-minute dash from the shuttle drop-off to the open road. Anyone choosing to rent from the LAX Rental Car Center in the short term must treat an express rental program membership as a necessary tool, not an optional feature, to capitalize on the convenience this new mega-facility is designed to provide.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1If you’re flying into LAX and need a rental car, avoid the new LAX Rental Car Center at all costs.First, you have to take a courtesy shuttle from the airport just to get there. The shuttle drops you off, but then you still have about a five-minute walk just to get inside the building. Once you finally get in, be prepared for a nightmare. The entire facility is basically only AVIS and Budget—all of the other rental companies run under them—so you’re stuck waiting in their lines no matter what company you booked with.We arrived on a Saturday around 1:00 PM, and the lines were horrendous. Easily an hour or more just to reach an agent. After a long flight, this is the last thing anyone wants to deal with.If you absolutely have to rent here, do yourself a favor and set up an express rental in advance. That’s the only way to skip the insane lines, head straight downstairs to the garage, and pick up your car. Otherwise, my advice is simple: don’t rent from here. You’re better off taking an Uber or Lyft to a rental car location away from the airport. It’ll save you frustration, time, and a lot of standing around in endless lines.
September 30 · DamonThis was a somewhat chaotic and long-winded experience. The lines were very long, the weights were very long, the building itself it was confusing as to where to find things, it took about 2 hours from getting off the bus to getting into my car. I already had a reservation and I'm not sure why it took this long. My understanding is that the cars were still getting prepped and this was part of the reason for the delay. To be fair there is a lot of new construction happening and not all the kinks have been ironed out. If using car service in the next 6 months to a year it will take longer to get your vehicle so plan wisely.
July 16 · ofelia elfakihBetter trip back to lax on budget bus than the arrival. At least the younger bus drivers aren't rude. Thus time they met me on the sidewalk away from the vus and carried my luggage onto the bus and when I got to the terminal they helped me get my luggage off. Very impressed with this bus driver although I wish I knew his name. Thank you for such great service today.
October 11 · Jackie WeaverHad to wait 2+ hours for Budget car. AVIS out of one way rentals. Ughhh, running out of cars, cars with 25,000+ miles on them, might need to step up with travel. This place will need a face-lift before the tram way is done.
August 11 · Richard ThayerI rented from Budget on 5/30/2025 and it was literally the worst experience in my like. Right next to us was Avis, and it looked exactly the same. The long lines and under staffed companies was not an isolated issue to Budget, it’s ALL of them. I had my travel companion check Hertz and one other car rental (I think it was Enterprise) that are in the same complex and the situation was the same. I waited in line 1:45 minutes to get a car o had already reserved 2 months ago. The type of car I had reserved was no longer available and they offered a much lower category which I did not accept. So it was literally adding insult to injury. Once on the car rental complex you are literally TRAPPED. You can’t get an uber to get out of there and returning to the airport and starting from scratch would mean another hour and if not more. It feels as if this is perfectly calculated by these companies to trap you there, giving you not much choice but to accept their inefficiency. I don’t recommend anyone to get a car at LAX. Get yourself to your hotel in a taxi or uber and then look for a car rental place near your hotel. I found three near my hotel in Santa Monica. No lines. In the end, this was a HORRIBLE experience that I don’t wish upon anyone. Sadly, while we endure their inefficient service and system, the executive suite at Budget is enjoying their annual bonus for making lots of money. SHANE IN YIU BUDGET!! never again from my end! And I will steer as many people away from you as I can.
