NU Auto Rental Introduce
For residents and visitors arriving in Southern California, particularly at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), securing reliable and safe transportation is the first step toward enjoying the Golden State. NU Auto Rental, operating as NU Car Rentals, is an off-site car rental agency often promoted through online travel agencies for its seemingly competitive pricing. The agency offers a wide range of vehicle types, from economy cars to minivans and SUVs, attempting to cater to diverse travel needs, from solo trips to large family excursions across California.
As an off-airport provider, NU Car Rentals’ operational model is centered on offering cost-effective rates by avoiding the higher fees associated with on-airport facilities. They serve travelers who are willing to navigate a slightly more complex pickup process to achieve potential savings. However, the experience of a customer booking with NU Car Rentals, as reflected in public reviews, points to significant and alarming disparities between the initial booking promise and the final service delivery. Customers frequently report issues that are critically important for any local user to know, including vehicle unavailability, unexpected upcharges, and serious concerns about vehicle roadworthiness and legal compliance, such as expired registration.
The tone of customer feedback is overwhelmingly negative, highlighting chaotic service, lengthy wait times for both shuttles and counter service, and a business practice of upselling or penalizing customers for reservation issues that are the fault of the agency. For California-based families or anyone with a strict itinerary, this information is vital for making an informed, safety-conscious decision before committing to a reservation.
NU Auto Rental's Los Angeles branch is strategically located near the LAX airport corridor, providing off-site service that requires a specific transfer from the airport terminals. The main location details are:
Address: 9620 Airport Blvd #44, Los Angeles, CA 90045, USA
This location is often cited as being situated in the lobby or immediately adjacent to a major hotel near the airport, such as the Westin or Renaissance, which can be confusing for first-time users. To reach the location from the airport, travelers must first utilize an airport shuttle to a designated area (like the "Pink Shuttle" or a general hotel shuttle zone), and then coordinate a separate pick-up to the NU Car Rental office.
Customer reviews consistently describe the accessibility process as cumbersome:
- The dedicated shuttle service for NU Car Rentals is reported as infrequent and overcrowded, leading to significant delays upon arrival.
- The initial pick-up point and the multiple shuttle transfers can be confusing, especially after a long flight, contrasting sharply with the streamlined, consolidated rental car facilities offered by major on-site competitors.
- The facility itself is located outside the direct LAX terminal area, which can add substantial time to the rental pickup and drop-off process.
- The business location features a Wheelchair accessible entrance and Wheelchair accessible parking lot, which are important accessibility features for customers with mobility needs, though the accessibility of the shuttle service itself is also a factor to consider.
Contacting the company upon arrival is a recurrent issue. Customer feedback notes difficulty reaching the local office by phone to coordinate shuttle service, which can compound delays.
NU Auto Rental is a general Car rental agency that provides vehicles across several categories. The company also states that it accepts various forms of payment. Key services include:
- Vehicle Reservations: Offering bookings for a range of vehicles, including economy, compact, midsize, SUVs, and minivans, often through third-party travel websites.
- Off-Airport Shuttle Service: Providing a courtesy shuttle for transfers between the LAX airport terminal shuttle area and the rental office.
- Payment Options: The agency accepts major Credit cards and Debit cards for payment, though specific restrictions on card usage (e.g., local renters vs. non-local renters, or debit card acceptance for deposits) often apply and should be verified upfront.
- Ancillary Equipment: Offering optional items such as child car seats (infant, child, and booster) and GPS rental, though these services are typically subject to extra daily fees.
While the company aims to offer competitive rates, the actual 'features' that define the customer experience, according to public reports, highlight potential pitfalls for renters:
- Low Initial Price Lures: The company's main marketing strength is the low initial price displayed on online booking platforms. However, this feature is repeatedly undermined by mandatory upselling at the counter.
- Reservation Disregard: A significant feature in customer accounts is the failure to honor confirmed, pre-paid reservations, particularly for in-demand vehicle classes like minivans. Customers are frequently forced to accept a lower-class vehicle or pay an 'upcharge' for an undesired alternative.
- Hidden and Mandatory Fees: Reports indicate that the final cost is dramatically inflated by charges for mandatory insurance (even with customer's own proof of insurance), toll passes, and various 'admin fees' that are not disclosed or clearly itemized during the online booking process.
- Subpar Vehicle Safety and Cleanliness: A major highlight of customer complaints is the poor condition of the vehicles, including damages, lack of cleaning, dashboard warning lights, and, most critically, being provided with a vehicle that has an expired registration, posing a serious safety and legal risk to the renter.
- Customer Service Deficiencies: Long wait times (up to 45 minutes) at the counter, unhelpful staff, and limited operating hours that are not always accurately posted online (e.g., closing at 7 pm instead of 8 pm) are commonly reported service "features."
For direct contact or to resolve issues, customers should use the following information for the Los Angeles location:
Address: 9620 Airport Blvd #44, Los Angeles, CA 90045, USA
Phone: While multiple numbers may be associated with the national brand, the local office can often be reached at an affiliated line. Customers are also advised to check their booking voucher for a dedicated pick-up number.
Important Note: Travelers must confirm the working hours (typically Monday to Friday 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM; Saturday and Sunday 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM, with variations) and understand the strict cut-off times for after-hours arrivals, as failure to reach the office before closing can result in a lost reservation and no immediate vehicle.
For California travelers, especially families arriving at LAX, the apparent "value" offered by NU Auto Rental on third-party sites is not worth the risk. A careful evaluation of the available public data leads to a strong recommendation to choose a reputable, major rental brand instead.
The documented instances of being forced to pay hundreds of dollars in unexpected fees, being denied a confirmed reservation (like the essential minivan for a family with young children and elderly passengers), and being handed a vehicle with an expired, illegal registration are not minor inconveniences; they are serious operational and safety failures. A $300 emergency Uber fare, as reported by one customer, can instantly erase any perceived saving from the initial low quote. Furthermore, being stuck with an illegally registered or mechanically compromised vehicle puts the renter and their passengers at unacceptable risk when driving across the extensive Southern California freeway network to destinations like Palm Springs.
The stress, delay, and financial overreach described by customers suggest that choosing NU Auto Rental introduces a high probability of a deeply stressful start to a vacation or business trip. For reliability, safety, and transparent pricing, prioritizing a major rental company located in the official LAX Consolidated Rent-A-Car (ConRAC) facility, even at a slightly higher base price, is a far more prudent choice for anyone visiting or traveling within the California region.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Extremely Disappointing Experience – Unsafe Vehicle, Dishonored Reservation, and Added CostsOur experience with NU Car Rentals at LAX was nothing short of appalling. What should have been a smooth start to a long-planned family trip quickly turned into a stressful ordeal due to poor service, lack of accountability, and serious safety concerns.Weeks in advance, we reserved a minivan — not as a luxury, but as a necessity. We were traveling from Boston with two toddlers (ages 1 and 2) and three elderly family members, one with heart complications. The minivan was essential for transporting our group safely and comfortably to Palm Springs.Upon arrival at LAX, my partner and I left our children and elders at the terminal and took the Pink Shuttle to NU’s pickup location. Despite arriving early, we encountered long waits due to overcrowded and infrequent shuttles. Once we reached the NU rental office, we stood in line for nearly 45 minutes, witnessing multiple customers being told their reserved vehicles were unavailable — unless they paid more for unwanted “upgrades.”Sure enough, when we reached the counter, we were told our reserved minivan wasn’t available. We were given two poor options: wait another 3+ hours or pay extra for an SUV. Despite the issue being entirely NU’s fault, we were expected to absorb the cost and inconvenience. We explained that our exhausted family — with car seats, luggage, and strollers — was still at the airport, and we had a 2.5 to 3-hour drive ahead. But there was no real effort to help us or correct the situation without penalty. To avoid an even longer delay, we reluctantly took the SUV, knowing it couldn’t accommodate all of us and our belongings. My partner had to take a $300 Uber to get the rest of the family to our destination. The most alarming part? The SUV NU provided had an expired registration — from February 2024. This wasn’t just inconvenient; it was dangerous and potentially illegal. Driving across Southern California with an expired registration, especially with small children and elderly passengers, was completely unacceptable. It showed a blatant disregard for customer safety and basic operational standards. In summary:• Our confirmed reservation was not honored.• We were pressured to pay more for a vehicle we didn’t want.• We incurred a $300 Uber expense to transport our full group.• The vehicle we were given was not legally registered.• Our family was left waiting, our trip delayed, and the entire experience was stressful and chaotic.I cannot recommend NU Car Rentals to anyone — especially families. This experience was unprofessional, unsafe, and deeply frustrating from start to finish. We are requesting a full refund of the SUV upcharge, reimbursement of the $300 Uber fare, and appropriate compensation for the disruption and distress caused. At the very least, an apology is in order.
July 30 · Lisa TallutoI really should've checked the reviews before booking, but the price was just too good to pass up, and now I totally understand why. When I got here, I tried to contact them because I couldn't find the shuttle. I ended up calling the hotel that was supposed to provide the shuttle, and they gave me a number that didn't work, so I had no way to reach them. Checking in was okay, but the car they gave me had some problems. I hadn't even had the rental for 5 hours when a warning light popped up on the dashboard, along with some other lights (which totally ruined my trip). I'm trying my best to get in touch with them, only to find out they close at 7pm instead of 8pm like it says on their website. So, I had to park the car for the night because I didn't want to get stuck somewhere. The next day, I texted them using the number they provided for shuttle pickups. I ended up swapping cars, and the lady said they would give me a discount that would show up when I returned the car. Well, I checked, and they didn't apply any discount. Oh, and I forgot to mention the damages on the car, so make sure to do a walk-around with them and take pictures too because both cars I had were damaged, and they don't clean them well either. But I guess you get what you pay for.
July 22 · TaKarra HardenClassic Bait-and-Switch Scam – Avoid NU Car Rental at All CostsI booked a car through Priceline with NU Car Rental for July 7, 2025, expecting a great deal—$90 for five days under a “Supplier’s Choice” option. I even canceled a more expensive $188 booking because this one looked more affordable. Big mistake. When I arrived at the NU Car Rental location, I was informed that there would be a two-hour wait for my reserved car unless I “upgraded” and paid an extra $109. This felt blatantly manipulative. I could literally see multiple cars sitting in the lot. It was clear they were using the “delay” as a high-pressure tactic to upsell customers who were in a hurry—classic bait-and-switch behavior. With no realistic choice and time constraints pressing, I reluctantly agreed to the so-called upgrade. End result? My rental cost more than my original $188 booking—$197 in total. So much for saving money. But the nightmare didn’t end there. The car I received was in noticeably poor condition:Scratches and dings all over the exteriorInterior was not properly cleanedGas tank was only half full, even though full-to-full is the industry normIt’s infuriating to be forced into an upsell only to receive a dirty, damaged, and under-fueled vehicle. It showed a total lack of respect for the customer. The staff was dismissive and unapologetic, and the entire experience felt like a scam being run on unsuspecting travelers.I reached out to Priceline and NU to request compensation for:The $109 I was coerced into paying for an unnecessary upgradeThe lost time and stressThe substandard condition of the carThe deceptive sales practices that feel designed to trap budget-conscious rentersSo far, I haven’t seen meaningful accountability from either company. This experience has left me questioning whether Priceline vets its rental partners at all—and whether NU Car Rental exists solely to exploit people with dishonest tactics.Do yourself a favor and stay far away from NU Car Rental. And if you’re booking through Priceline, be extremely cautious about “great deals” that look too good to be true—because they probably are.
July 16 · Jeet TrivediI booked a car through EconomyBookings for 11 days in San Diego. They charged me $219.88 through NU Car Rentals — great price, right? When I arrived, there was no NU Car desk at the airport. I called, and they said they were offsite and would send a shuttle. After waiting about 30 minutes, we finally got picked up.When we got there, the guy behind the counter told us:“We have no cars available.”After an hour of back and forth, he arranged a car from another small company for $484 — more than double the price. The first car they gave us was an old van with 135,000 miles, and it took two days to get a decent replacement. If I had just booked directly with Avis or Hertz, etc, it would’ve been cheaper and stress-free.Avoid EconomyBookings and NU Car Rentals San Diego. The low price isn’t worth the headache. This is a shady set up and ways to bait and switch.
October 10 · Niko Mozaffar (FairPlay)Not only did we wait forever, despite us paying for an SUV they did not have any SUVs and first put us in a car with no seatbelts in the back seat, took photos of it & then tried to gaslight us when we pointed it out. they then walked away and later gave us a dirty car. when we pointed this out we had to wait even longer. it’s no wonder they have to partner with expedia. with the safety issues i’m not sure how they are even able to rent cars.
