We were traveling from Boston with two toddlers (ages 1 and 2) and three elderly family members, one with heart complications. The minivan was essential for transporting our group safely and comfortably to Palm Springs.Upon arrival at LAX, my partner and I left our children and elders at the terminal and took the Pink Shuttle to NU’s pickup location. Despite arriving early, we encountered long waits due to overcrowded and infrequent shuttles. Once we reached the NU rental office, we stood in line for nearly 45 minutes, witnessing multiple customers being told their reserved vehicles were unavailable — unless they paid more for unwanted “upgrades.”Sure enough, when we reached the counter, we were told our reserved minivan wasn’t available. We were given two poor options: wait another 3+ hours or pay extra for an SUV. Despite the issue being entirely NU’s fault, we were expected to absorb the cost and inconvenience.We explained that our exhausted family — with car seats, luggage, and strollers — was still at the airport, and we had a 2.5 to 3-hour drive ahead. But there was no real effort to help us or correct the situation without penalty. To avoid an even longer delay, we reluctantly took the SUV, knowing it couldn’t accommodate all of us and our belongings. My partner had to take a $300 Uber to get the rest of the family to our destination.The most alarming part? The SUV NU provided had an expired registration — from February 2024. This wasn’t just inconvenient; it was dangerous and potentially illegal.
