What I got at first, after waiting in a long line on a Sunday with only one agent, was a non-EV (a Chevy Malibu). This would have been fine for me, had the car not broken down a day later (battery was dying/died two days later/had to be jumped). I was able to return the car for exchange, this time getting the EV I reserved, a Hyundai Kona. After driving around the area, the car made a wobbling sound each time I brought the car to a stop (sounded like a wheel bearing). Because I was not about to have the wheel fall off and get charged for it, I brought the Hyundai back for exchange. I wanted to just cancel the reservation in the hopes of getting money back (I would just get rides from family), but was told the reservation was non-refundable, so I went ahead and exchanged. This time I got a Kia EV6…from the President’s Circle parking space! Finally, an EV worth the rental experience! Lots of features to learn, some I didn’t have time to play around with, some I did. Cosmetic damage to go around, as with any rental these days….I am going over their little contract/receipt and see a charge on there that I am unfamiliar with…a staple with rental car companies these days, I guess.Summary: ROC/Hertz needs to better maintain their vehicles. NO vehicle should go out with any mechanical damage. As for the cosmetic damage, I feel Hertz needs to better scrutinize who rents their vehicles.One would think that with the money Hertz charges, they would care a little more about their reputation. There was no explanation, by the way, as to why I didn’t initially get what I reserved…I figured it was availability…but that is just the wrong foot to start off.
July 12 · Henry BenisonPicked up my rental today on crutches in Rochester Airport. The staff was excellent in helping me out. The customer service counter rep went above and beyond in walking to the garage and getting one of the car attendants to bring the car to the airport door so I wouldn't need to go far on the crutches. The car attendant was also great, showed me the various controls and their location on the brand new vehicle and generally was very pleasant and helpful in directing me to my destination, also. Hell, even the security folks at the airport were helpful and cheerful. Good stuff, for sure.
October 13 · Dennis D DiamondIf I could leave 0 stars I would. While the lady at the pickup counter was sweet the experience after was terrible. The vehicle smelled so bad like weed. The rear tire was super low and thought it would need to be replaced. They said it was a pre-existing issue and we're going to give us a tire voucher to have it fixed. We added air ourselves and it ended up being ok. They then charged for Emergency Roadside Service fee of almost $500 to my bill without any kind of authorization. They told us it would be removed since the service was not used nore was the authorized. Now they are telling me they will not remove the charge. What a terrible company I would never use them again. I will continue to fight the charge because it's fraudulent and should never have been added.

The online booking process was simple, but my in-person experience at your rental counter was extremely disappointing and left me regretting my choice.Upon arrival, I was told that I could not use my debit card without a New York ID and that a credit check would have to be run. I have rented with Hertz before in San Antonio, Texas, and with other companies across the U.S., and I have never encountered this requirement. None of this was disclosed to me during booking.The representative assisting me, Renee, was rude, dismissive, and lacked both empathy and professionalism. Instead of offering solutions, she made me feel as though I was being pushed out of the process. She repeatedly insisted I allow Hertz to refuel my car upon return—at a flat cost of about $40—without considering my situation. I am perfectly capable of refueling the car myself, and it was insulting to be pressured otherwise.I had also requested a larger vehicle for medical reasons, as I am in a walking boot and needed cruise control to rest my foot. My daughter’s luggage barely fit into the trunk of the smaller car I was given. Renee did not acknowledge my request and ignored my concerns.For comparison, I spoke with Enterprise—whose desk is nearby—and confirmed:• They do not run credit checks.• They accept debit cards when renters have a return flight the same day as drop-off (as I did).• They do not require large deposits under these circumstances.This shows me that Hertz policies, combined with poor customer service, create unnecessary obstacles for customers. In contrast, Enterprise has consistently provided me with smoother, more customer-oriented service.This trip was important to me, as I was dropping my daughter off at college. After flight delays, all I wanted was a smooth rental experience. Instead, I was met with stress, rudeness, and extra costs.I am requesting a refund for this rental, as I am completely dissatisfied with the service I received. I strongly encourage Hertz to review both its customer service standards and policies around debit card usage to ensure they are more aligned with customer needs.Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter.
