★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Disappointing and dangerous Avis rental experience, understanding and good staff. Avis knowingly rented us a car that didn’t have sufficient oil, and had other concerning issues due to lack of maintenance. One hour after leaving the garage, our car displayed a message saying engine oil low add oil and a oil change due message. Being in the middle of rural Pennsylvania we called Avis roadside who said we could either swap out the car at the nearest Avis location (over an hour away in the opposite direction), get a oil change and be reimbursed up to $100 (which might not even cover the cost of an oil change), or add oil ourselves and get reimbursed by Avis for the oil.For us, none of the options were feasible with it being a Sunday evening in rural Pennsylvania. When renting a car, the expectation is you can safely drive it, and not have to worry about their maintenance responsibilities. We hadn’t even gone though a 1/4 of a tank of gas at this point. With 1day and 400miles before we could return the car, roadside said we could probably just wing it and be fine, which wasn’t particularly reassuring but was our only option.Upon manually checking the oil level, we’d also discovered that no maintenance had been done on the car since 28k miles, which was 17k miles ago at this point. This would explain the other various issues we experienced such as the heavy steering and squeaking when making turns, the odd noise when accelerating, and sluggish acceleration.Furthermore, all of our tires were at different pressures, and while the tires themselves weren’t dangerous low on tread, they could definitely be replaced and I wouldn’t feel comfortable driving in anything but sunny conditions with them. We’ve rented with Avis many times and are always accustomed to a lackluster experience which leaves lots to be desired for, but this was especially disappointing because there were many obvious issues which should of prevented this car from being rented in the first place. What’s aggravating is that these are super basic maintenance items, fluid changes and new tires at most, which makes us wonder what else is Avis skimping out on. However, the bottom line was that this car was obviously not road worthy. After this ordeal, this might finally be our last time with Avis. However, the staff did make things right in the end, Ahmad at Newark went above and beyond along with the other staff at the preferred counter. Avis roadside was also helpful, but their general customer support phone line leaves room for improvement. While I wouldn’t tell people to rent from Avis, if you do I would advise throughly checking the car before you leave the airport, taking pictures of everything before and after, all related receipts, and refuse to take the car if you encounter any sort of issue or light at the garage.
September 30 · Unknown UserRental car they gave us was down right dangerous and I should probably file a lawsuit! Absolutely the worst business I've delt with to date!1st off, it was very late (1am) when we finally got in, so the car I was supposed to get was no longer available despite there 2 hr hold window.2nd, I noticed the first car had 1/4 of a tank of fuel while we were trying to exit the garage. Once we left the garage in this car, went to use the windshield wipers due to rain, and found out this car was missing the passenger side windshield wiper. Returned and noticed the car has paint pen marks all over it like it was supposed to go to the repair shop, not back out on the road. Asked for a replacement rental car.3rd, the next car they put us in didn't have a key. Asked for another replacement rental car.4th, the final car they gave us seemed ok until we got it out on the highway. Very loud droning sound and vibration starting at about 50 mph. Mind you it is 3 am at this point, so we went to our hotel. Next day we proceeded to drive this car 2 hrs south. Once parked, I happened to check the back tires because the car started riding worst as we went down the Parkway. The inside tires were so badly worn, past the belts, I deemed the car unsafe for us to drive, both for our safety and the publics! Was on the phone with road side service for over 4 hrs with no resolution. They had cars locally they could have exchanged but refused to do so. Ended up leaving the Avis rental at a local Avis place of business so they could tow it back to EWR. Went to Enterprise locally, and they gave us a perfectly fine rental car to drive one way back to the airport without batting an eye.5th, Once home, I called customer service because I kept getting text messages saying our car was past due. I told them the car was towed back to the airport and I dropped the keys off at the Avis counter on time. They said they weren't charging me for this rental.I'd advise not using Avis ever again! Our go to is National/Enterprise, where we have had no issues, and we rent a lot of cars.
June 26 · Talian KretschmarI've probably done 200+ car rentals, but this time it was such a bad experience, one of the worst, that I had to write this review warning others not to book from here or really Avis in general.I booked a car for 2 days here and initially my selected option was not available. No problem, happens all the time. But I had opted for a smaller sportier car, they initially tried to give me an SUV but driving in NYC with an SUV is extremely annoying. But eventually I had to convince them to give me a sedan. Then, the next evening, I had to run a few errands and pick up several things before my flight the next day. The car gets a flat, not because of any holes or nails, just a faulty tire. I call Avis' customer support and roadside assistance, and they say I have to pay, but not sure how much.So I get the tire replaced on my own. I waste about 3-4 hours doing so, and I can't go to the places I needed to. My return was scheduled for the next day at 10am, I ask them if I can get 3 hours (which is how much time I wasted with the car being inoperable, not a whole day, just 3 hours), they state I will be charged for another day for doing so. I then return the car, explain my issue to them. They say nope nothing can be done, and the car must be returned. I had to get another car then to go get my work done and return back...I then call Avis to speak about this, the first agent shuts my phone off. The second agent, after a lot of back of forth, finally creates a case and promises a call back in 2-3 days. I never got a call, and had to call back 1 month later, but I'm told they can offer me the roadside assistance's number to get compensation. I ask for what? I didn't pay them anything? They're like I don't know? And to top it off, I paid for unlimited tolls with an EZPass transponder, a few weeks after the rental I get two toll bills in the mail. And am told again that I will be called back to discuss those (1.5 months after being billed for them...) When asked what about the fact that I paid for the transponder? They're like we don't know...Save your mental health, book with another company and get much better service. Just do not book here.
August 03 · Emaad ParachaIt took an hour to get my car. What's the point of having a reservation and giving your arrival time if they are not better prepared. I felt bad for the 1 person working the counter with a huge line of people waiting. They should staff accordingly to the schedule of expected arrivals to better serve customers. In addition my rental had leftover trash in it from the previous user. I would probably not use Avis again in the future unless I had to. This was a disappointing experience.
October 04 · Laurel CohenAbsolute worst car rental experience of my life. As a preferred member, I was happy to see that I had a very short line as opposed to the regular counter at the airport. Little did I know later that it would be the most exhausting experience and a thorough waste of time dealing with the agent at the preferred counter. The female agent was rude and brusque when assigning the car, telling me only the stall number to go to, which was fine, at least it would be a fast transaction, or so I thought. After walking over and retrieving the car in the assigned stall number, I pulled out only for the gate agent telling me I couldn't leave because I was assigned another make and model car, so I returned back to the preferred counter, waited in line for 15 minutes, telling the same agent that I was given the wrong make and model, she told me (without apology) to go to another stall instead, which was on the entire side of the parking lot, a good ten minute walk (while I was carrying a heavy bag) on a hot day across the parking lot. I make it over to the newly assigned only to find... no car there! I open the Avis app and use the help function where I selected the "no car available" option and inputted the stall number and supposedly, an Avis representative would come over with a car. I waited 15 minutes before I realized no representative was coming and walked the entire length of the garage back to the preferred counter, waited again in line, facing the same agent to tell her that no car was at the newly assigned stall number and she again assigns me a different stall, saying that a car had just arrived so she knew it was there - of course I hurried to that stall to find a car so I hopped in so I could proceed on my journey which was already delayed. I only had to check out of the garage and pulling up to the gate attendant, I was dismayed to hear that again, I had the wrong car, the preferred agent had forgotten to input the newly assigned make and model for my reservation! I explained the entire story, how I had been trying to get the right car, going to three different stalls on a hot day carrying a heavy bag - I was pretty sweaty by this point. After a few minutes and realizing I was the same person who had tried to check out with a different car an hour earlier, she finally let me go, probably because she felt sorry for me. If it wasn't for that, who knows how much longer I would have had to find a car that would either be incorrectly assigned, or not even assigned, or in a stall where no car was located at. I should add that the car that I was finally assigned to was great and the return process was easy and the rep processing the return was courteous and professional. But getting the car and dealing with an incompetent, unprofessional and rude agent at the Preferred counter made the experience so horrible overall, I have decided I will never rent from Avis again.
